The 2008 Ice Storm

|
 | A Boy and His Dog
The boy and his dog, normally much warmer, are at play all the time in Springfield's beautiful Close Memorial Park. George Deatz, who took these photographs, is a member of Friends of the Garden, the nonprofit group that creates botanical gardens in the park and also is raising funds to build a new Botanical Center on the site. George took the pictures February 12-13.
| | Icy Sundial
We were going to say something about being "frozen in time," but decided to show visitors some mercy. Aren't you glad? Isn't it a nifty photo?
| | Frozen Gazebo A beautiful gazebo in the park's Daylily Garden provided a rare note of color in the storm.
| | Winter on the Lake Lake Drummond in Close Memorial Park is always beautiful, and winter, and even ice storms, are no exception.
| | Frozen Plants Springfield caught the brunt of the ice storm, leaving trees and shrubs weighted down with at least a half-inch of ice.
| | White Garden The park's White Garden, based on the famous Sissinghurst Castle garden of Vita Sackville-West, turned truly white with the ice, and its metal archway and dormant climbing roses nothing less than surreal.
